What do I need to do to start a home-based business in England?

I am looking to possibly start a small communications business from home. What I would like to know is what sort of licencing and tax status (I am a UK resident, but not a citizen) I need in order to do this, approximate costs and where to go to get things started.
Any help is appreciated.
You just have to register with HMRC as self employed. They will send you all the paperwork. Cannot tell you approx costs or how to get started as you have not given any info on your business (it could be anything).
You can do *Any* legal work anywhere in the uk. good luck.
Just pay the gov taxes and all’s cool.
