Home Based Business For Under $100 To Start Up

Do you know how many people in the United States are considering starting a home based business? The Harris Poll states that 72% of all adults are seeking business opportunities so that they can quit their jobs and work on their own.

How many people are actually skilled enough to run a business? The primary prerequisites for setting up of a business are – an office, a few products, a platform to sell the products, a good sales pitch, marketing skills, lots of leads and some sort of support system. Not many people have that many resources or even the basic training required for starting a business.

One of the easiest low capital business opportunities that requires very little or no knowledge or skill is Multi Level Marketing (MLM) or network marketing.
MLM is not a new concept but the internet has truly revolutionized it. It has helped many individuals over the years to change from timid introverts to outspoken, confident salespersons and successful business owners.

MLM can prove to be a disappointment if a person does not understand how it actually functions. Many people get their first exposure to MLM when they are obliging someone and helping them out with their MLM business opportunity. What people do not realize is that even a tiny participation in the MLM business means you are part of it and with a bit of work you can build it into a serious income over the course of a few years.

When MLM companies first started on the Internet, they helped many people succeed very fast because those people had a strong team of affiliates working for them. At the same time, there were many people who could never understand how to make money with an MLM home based business.

A home based business that needs only an Internet connection to run is a good business for you to own. The startup cost is low, no inventories to maintain and so on. This means that the risk involved is very low. This can lead to a lack of commitment since it costs very little, so people do not take it seriously. You can join a MLM program and spend months with nothing happening. At this point, most people decide to quit and start looking for some other program or, even worse, some people will simply give up on trying to make money on the Internet.

This is where the ‘marketing’ line of thought makes a difference. People who meet sales deadlines do not succeed immediately. They do not have any magic bullets. They simply work hard with a lot of perseverance.

The important point is that an Internet based business can earn you a very decent income, just like a regular business. You have to work hard in your home based business just as you would in a regular business. Making money on the Internet is no easier than making money in the conventional way. The harder you work, the better your chance of financial success. The basic difference between an internet business and a regular business is that, in online business, you have a lower risk involved as it is very possible to set up a home based for under $100 start up cost. And for only under $100, you can start your own business that would have the potential to generate solid returns much more than your full time job.

Mary Kay, Avon, other home based businesses … what’s best???
My wife went to a Mary Kay party & she is now considering being a consultant. She can sign up to sell for $100.

We have 4 children and she has been wanting to find something she could do part time, while I am home (I work 12 hour shifts 3 x’s a week).

We looked online and we read a lot of Mary Kay horror stories about how people have quit because seniority breathing down their backs to bring in more profit. Some people suggest Avon is better because you strictly work for yourself.

We would like to find something for her that is under $250 start up costs and something that will not create a stressed out life for her.

Any advice for or against Mary Kay or Avon? Or do you know better business opportunities that could keep our children being raised by a daycare center???

  2. earmour says:

I know for a fact that in most places Mary Kay doesn’t breathe down your neck… they offer a lot of cool stuff that motivates you to sell… plus their product is so wonderful that is sells itself, and no I am not a Mary Kay consultant trying to build them up. My sister is a Mary Kay consultant, and when she started I just bought product to help her out, now almost 2 years later that is all I wear, and I went from clinique! She loves it and she had a baby about a year ago, and has wanted to focus on him, Mary Kay hasn’t given her any grief, the only downside is that you do have to sell 250 dollars worth every like 3-4 months to keep getting your 50% discount which is how you make your money. Good Luck to your wife!!!

Both of those companies are what is called network or multilevel marketing. To be honest, you will find horor stories about any network marketing company out there. The real bottom line though to any network marketing company is that you are YOUR OWN BOSS. Your success and failure is completely in your own control. The stories about people breathing down anyones backs are simply because they got involved with an overly ambitious sponsor.
To be honest, your best bet is to first learn everything you can, good and bad, about either company. But the simple truth to these companies is that both are cosmetic companies. Your wife would probably want to market which ever one she likes more.
I have known people who have sold both. Avon seems to have more options of stuff to sell, but Mary Kay seems to have the better products. Really, just do the research.
Talk to a Mary Kay rep, and talk to an Avon rep. Tell them each you are going to do one or the other, so you want to know about both to make your decision.

I am a representative for a company called Warm Spirit, Inc. It isn’t makeup and we have a wonderful product line. I tell all of my prospective business partners to look at all of their options. The pay plans on some may be high, but you have to maintain inventory, and ship from your home, not directly from the company. I would also ensure that the company is a member of the Direct Selling Association. http://www.dsa.org, or the Direct Selling Women’s Association, http://www.mydswa.org. You also need to be aware of newer companies, some are selling themselves to larger similar companies, or going out of business all together, leaving consultants at a huge loss. Also visit consultant check, http://www.assist.com/vb/index.php , they have information on scams, and legitimate businesses. Hope this helps.

Oh i so know where you are coming from. I am a stay at home mom with four children. I want the extra money that my family would like for a savings account, fun with kids and maybe pay off an extra fifty dollars a month on a credit card. I did not want to invest a ton of time as I stay home with my children so that a daycare center is not raising them…I AM. I am there for cuts and bruises, I am there for first steps and breast feeding and I am there for disciplining.

I have been searching for years after being hit by the first scam in 1999. The only thing I can tell you is this without spamming you my business.

    1. The only legit type are mlm marketing…don’t confuse this with pyramid its NOT the same thing as anyone who knows what they are really talking about knows. This means your wife would sign up under someone and people would sign up under her. This is legal as long as the person at the top dosen’t stay at the top as far as pay. It always rotates that you only get paid a CERTAIN number of people down.

    2. I do a business that I am just having a ball with where I go to someone’s home and only talk for about 10-15 minutes. Not have to give an hours worth of my own time. Make sure she is going to want to exude all that energy. I did Mary Kay but found I couldn’t really find a decent customer base as the company has been around forever. I know someone doing it now having the same problem. Everyone already has a consultant …Do you see? Same problem with Pamperd Chef etc. The one I have now, hardly anyone has heard of in my area so the potential for a big customer base is much better. Plus mine is interesting to BOTH men and women. So my potential customer base just doubled. Am I making sense?

    3. My start up cost was 170 and that included everything I needed to get started. And i don’t just mean make up and trays. I mean EVERYTHING but pens LOL.Not just product but tools and supplies etc.

    4. I am not a pressure upline person. Many are. You need to find something where you have someone above your wife that won’t make her feel like she isn’t giving of herself enough to make her and the person above her more money. Try to find something where that person just wants extra money not a monthly income like myself. They are hard to find but out there. Your wifes family time comes first, not the side business.

If you want to contact me or your wife wants a friend to chat who understands what it is to start out my email is khsesrussell@yahoo.com

Good Luck and hope to hear from you.

Hi Brad, I’d love to tell you more about Mary Kay but honestly, other than purchasing a small amount, I know very little. I too have heard all the horror stories as we have several former MK ladies on our lia sophia Jewelry team. Stories about having to carry inventory that may or may not sell before it expires and then being stuck with a basement full of thousands of dollars worth of stock. I’ve seen so many MK reps at vendor shows and felt nothing but sorry for them as they sat there alone. I’m not knocking the product, I know there are many who are faithful to it and love it, but don’t have to deal w/the business aspect. I would have your wife find a company that has very low minimums and promises not to pressure beyond her capabilities but also supports and offers incentives. It should be something she loves and can be passionate about. Loving it and being willing to get out there and work is half the battle. I can personally suggest lia sophia if she’s a jewelry lover (www.liasophia.com/cookie2). I have been very successful with this business and have traveled all over with them. I have a team that I love to work with and we support each other very much. We have no inventory to carry, no returns to make for customers, low minimums, great commissions, fabulous support, and start up costs are low. The company is generous in all areas. Please let me know if I can help, with lia sophia or any other questions. I am a direct sales junkie and can be quite informative ;). Blessings, Cookie

What I can tell you is my Mary Kay Director sold Avon for years while working full time as a Corporate Trainer and then moving to HR of a fortune 500 company were I also worked she then started her Mary Kay business and was able to quit her full time job as was I to stay home with our children. I would recommend you speak to the director of the group your wife is considering. Mary Kay is a great company and I would make sure you are making a decision based on fact.
Research Mary Kay Ash and you will see it is one of the highest selling direct sales Companies based in Faith, Family then Career. Mary Kay Ash was awarded many presages awards from the business community including greatest female entrepreneur business plan is taught at Harvard University.
As for Avon I’m not sure you have all the facts or perhaps I’m mistaken but you do not work for yourself you are distributor with Mary Kay you are an independent contrator. You make money from selling the product a new consultant and the top national sales directors make the same 50% commision on prodcut sales you do not have to earn it like with Avon. Her dicession is to order inventory or not and that is where you may hear stories. I can tell you my experience fact women who come in the business and treat it as a business become very successful women who treat it like easy money and complain instead of work fail. As for being forced to order inventory if you are looking at it as a business investment then you need product in oyur store however it is completly optional. I will tell you from personal experience it is harder when you stat with no or little inventory and my director explained it well as I’m sure hers will too. I was sceptical if this was going to work and thinking someone was scaming me. If she is not confortable with it she does not need to get it. If you have product on your shelf you are more likley to push yourself then if you don’t I have seen it and most people who choose no inventory fail.
Forgive me if I am ranting I am very patient about my belief in this company I have been to Dallas and toured the Manufacturing Plant and Coorporate Headquarters. I have seen lives changed and all the good this company has to offer it is truly a gift it is up to each person what they do with it.

Lastly if Mary Kay Ash listed to the negativity she was given and all the No’s this company would not exist today…She believed in herself and her business plan and pressed on to make her dream come true.

I have had friends who have tried to get me into being a consultant for Mary Kay and other types of things. Then one day i went to an Epicure party and was sold on the product and thought to myself i want to do this..before anyone presured me to do it. Epicure isnt make up, its resonably priced spices and cookware. Everyone likes food and ways to cook healthier tastier food faster. This stuff allows you to do that and who wouldnt want a job where you get to make people happy with good food! I love having get togethers and making munchies and stuff…now i can do it and potentially get money!!

There are two start up packages. On is 150ish and the other is 250ish. They encourage people to do it as a hobby, part time or full time. You are free to sell it as you want to. There is no penalty or sales quotas you will ever have to meet.

    Hope that helps!

PS anyone i have ever met who sells avon or mary kay has quit.

    Hello Brad,

My name is Debbie and I am from Pittsburgh Pa. I know where you are coming from. My husband has been there done that. In our 27 years together, I have sold things from 7 different companies. Some did work but went out of business. I have spent much money on the kits as well as stock. I usually wound up selling it cheap just to get rid of it when I failed to sell it.
I live in an area that is middle class and the people here work hard for their money. So in turn, they won’t spend it on expensive things they really don’t need. Sure my friends had parties for me out of sympathy, but the sales were all the same. They were very low in retail.
A little over a year ago I thought I would try again and started looking on the internet for a new and upcoming company, also something that everybody would buy. I looked for over 4 months until I finally found a company and after really checking it out…..I decided to go for it again. I didn’t let my husband know at first.
When he found out, I heard the same old words about this turning out to be the same old thing. I told him this was different (which he heard many times) and I would prove it to him. I joined the Candle of the Month Club with Scent-Sations. Every month I would receive a new Gourmet Soy Jar Candle, 1 Dozen Votives and 1 Bar of Gourmet Soy Soap. From the day I received that first shipment, my life has changed. My husband now helps me with WORD OF MOUTH ADVERTISING. He tells everybody how awesome the candles are. He wasn’t even a candle lover until this company came into my life.
I have customers who buy every month and I work SHOWS as well as FUNDRAISERS. I do HOME PARTIES when time allows.
I really would love to be able to send you and your wife some samples and an opportunity packet.
Please go to my website http://www.WinAFreeCandle.biz and I do have a .BIZ on the end of websit because this is a real BIZ, so click each tab and don’t forget to enter MY FREE CANDLE DRAWING. (click on the jar candle upper right!) Answer the survey on the drawing and I will send you some samples.
We make 50% on all sales. The start up is only $39.95 for the CANDLE OF THE MONTH and you receive a website with it for FREE.

If you are in a hurry for the sample call my voice mail and leave message with address at 1-888-895-5782

I do want to let you know that we have many HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAMS.

As I have said before…been there done that……..I just wish I could have found this company sooner.

Good luck on your search and believe me when I say…..If you and your wife want to make money from home then this is the way. These candles sell themselves and have converted many women who would only buy the high priced candles from the mall.

    I hope this answer helped.

I can’t say too much about Mary Kaye. I can tell you from experience that it really depends on your upline and what type of personality they have. I would like to help you understand that the pressure from your upline in any company basically depends on the upline individual themselves. For example, as a company Tupperware doesn’t not try to pressure someone into sales. However, sometimes the person who is your upline might have a pushy personality. Hence, I don’t think it is the company but really the person you sign up under. That would be true of Mary Kaye, Tupperware, Avon, or any other direct sales companies.

How do you know if the person you are signing up under will be a pushy person? Well, how are they now that they are trying to get you to join their company? Are they being pushy? Do they have a strong personality that rubs you the wrong way? If you get a bad feeling from them, they may not be a good fit for you. If you are bent on selling for that company, perhaps you can see if you can find someone with a personality that you feel you could work better with.

As for the second part of your question:There are several direct sales companies that she can join for under $250. Here is a list of examples.

Tupperware: Tupperware has a great reputation. They have been in business for over sixty years and have an excellent reputation due to their lifetime warranty. It is an easy product to sell because it is so well know. I am a Tupperware Director and your wife can join my team for $69.99 plus sales tax. All training is done via phone conference calls. When someone joins my team, I do a one on one call with them to find out what they are looking for and what they hope to earn. Basically, I find out what their goals are so that I know what they need from me. I would love to have your wife on my team. If your wife plans to do parties, she can earn just over $1000 a month, holding two average parties a week. You and her can go to my website and contact me if you would like more information. http://my.tupperware.com/DonnaLoudon

Avon: Avon is a great company because, again it has a good reputation. I am not sure how long the company has been in business, but they are well known. Due to this, they are easy to sell for. The best part is it only costs $10 to start Avon. Visit this site for more information or if you have any questions: http://driveraloudon.avonrepresentative.com/

Discovery Toys: They have also been in business for several years and have a good reputation. It costs between $100 to $150 to join, but their profit margin isn’t as high as Tupperware and Avon is.

    Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop: http://www.noahsarkworkshop.com/donnaloudon_s7722/?a=join

    Cello in a Box: http://www.celloinabox.com/1189/

    Usborne Books: http://www.ubah.com/ecommerce/default.asp?sid=J2110&gid=19751962

The further down this list I go, the less well known the company is. The problem with lesser known companies is sometimes it is harder to sell their product, hence, it may take longer for you to realize decent profits.

I hope this information helps you and wife in making your decision.

I am not going to try and sell you on what I do…I have friends that are in the business and they do ok..I wouldnt say they are replacing or creating executive incomes.Be wary that if you do sign up for Mary Kay you will be most likely pressured to buy inventory..If you want to do MK than by all means go for it,but only start out at what you can afford and go by your business activity…Dont order what your director feels comfortable with,as they are looking out for there paycheck…I would get with an honest director that is geniunely looking out for your best interest. Also dont order a high amount just to get a prize…most of the prizes you can get on ebay or at your local Wal-Mart.Its nice to work at home and be able to keep your children out of dayc are,but know this,it takes time to build a solid business and it will not happen overnight…when you decide on what you want to do,write out a plan and then stay consistent in working your business!I amalways an email away if you have any other questions, and if you want to connect with other moms I offer 2 work at home forums! My email address is funcandlebusiness@yahoo.com

I am making $500 a day on average by following a proven detailed system that my friend told me about, you can get this system FREE from:

    http://www.My-New-Apprentice.com

Trust me, everything is highlighted step by step and you will be clear as to exactly what you need to be doing.

You’ll need to invest some money as in any business, you can’t make serious money without spending a bit of money.

My advice is to stop looking for opportunities where you don’t have to spend a dime cos all you’ll ever make with those ops are pocket money. If you need serious money copy someone that is already doing it. Go here and get this system FREE:

I’ve been in Mary Kay for about 6 mts. I have a husband and 3 kids (3 yrs, 10mts, and I’m 33 weeks pregnant). No one made me join, I joined because I love all the free prizes and all my Mary Kay sisters. There is no multilevel marketing, because no one makes a portion of what I make. Do I have people call me to see how I’m doing? Yes, but no one is telling me to sell, sell, sell. Mary Kay truly believes in faith first, family second, and your career thrid and I love that. I think your wife would love it for the positive women and she would have the ability to make make 50% of what she sells in addition to a free car! I can get excited about that!

Hi, I have done Mary Kay and Avon, they are great opportunities for the right person. Neither one of them worked for me as you have to LOVE the product in order to be able to sell it effortlessly. After trying numerous others, I finally found a company where every product is like a dream come true, and introducing it to future clients is something that does not scare me. (I am an Independent Consultant for Arbonne International) My suggestion is to try the products, find the products that you absolutely LOVE. Talking with other consultants who are selling what you want to sell is the easiest to make a decision. Which ever you decide to do, keep in mind that you need to BECOME A PART OF THE PRODUCT.

Have you heard of Suzanne™ by Suzanne Somers? She has sold her products on HSN for 15 years and recently expanded to include consultants who hold home parties. Unlike Mary Kay, Avon etc who already have thousands of consultants this is a ground floor opportunity so the potential for growth is truly endless. Better yet, all your wife needs to purchase is her samples she doesn’t need to keep any inventory.

Suzanne™ offers beauty products, gourmet food, books, accessories and of course the Thigh Master and the Face Master. Commission’s range from 25%-40% depending on the product. Please visit my website at http://www.suzanne24.com/andrea for more information.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I am an Avon rep. I choose Avon because the start up cost is only $10. And you can sell on the internet, which allows your customers to have the products shipped directly to them. This lets me sell across the country, plus I don’t have to keep any inventory. I know a lot of people without a lot of money and Mary Kay is too expensive for most of my friends. Your wife should evaluate the kind of people she will be selling to and how much she actually wants to invest into startup costs. Check out my website – if you click on the shop tab you can check out all of the products available that she would be able to sell. There are also many guy products, it’s no longer available to just women (Derek Jeter has come out with a line of cologne, aftershave, deodorant) She can also sign up on the link also (it’s to the right on the homepage) http://www.youravon.com/msprague
