Can you make money with a part time home based fly tying business?

I am very good with small detailed crafts . I dont know why…. but I came across ‘fly tying’ . I think it is making lures or bait for fishermen. Is there a call for this type process? Could I make money with a home based business. Or do fishermen like to make their own flys? I know that often Craftspeople work long and hard on a creation , only to sell it for very little profit. Is there a market for this type of business, and can i make some decent money in the process?

There is money to be made at tying flies. Get yourself a copy of "Production Fly Tying" by A.K. Best. It has lots of great ideas about all kinds of things in. One I use all the time along with other "recipe" books. Good Luck and Go For It!
Flyflinger is correct, it is tough. I do make the most tying classic salmon flies then mounting them in a shadowbox and selling that.

I do think it is a good way for you to make some extra cash!
In my shop I tied custom bugs and others lures but cannot anymore and yes I did make good monet doing it!
I bought from several home based lure makers and weeded out the ones that had poor quality and workmanship.
I hope you do at least try it!
If you are really interested I would be glad to give you some info on sevreal types of bugs and flys!Or just info on how to sell your product!

Fly tying is an art, but with you bein’ good with detailin’ as you pointed out, ya’ might just give it a shot. Have ta’ say there’s a lot more than just the tyin’ itself, one has ta’ know different patterns, hooks, various tools needed and equipment etc., etc.. The link I gave is a good starter for tyin’. Hope it helps ya’ out ;)…http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/beginners/archive.html

Only if you can out tie a 10 year old Indonesian Girl that has been tying for 3 years and be able to sell them for 25 cents to some big wholesaler by the thousands. I tie my own fishing flies and it is fun but you can’t make a living at it. Now if you want to do it as a hobby it can be great, especially if you get into tying classic salmon flies. If you get good you can frame them and sell them for a good price, but tying flies for fishing you can not compete. Go Google “classic salmon flies” and/or “Atlantic salmon flies” they can be beautiful.

best way to start is to tie the flies that are hard to tie such as a deer hair mouse,,,,,just finding the right distributor is a challenge……..I see people walk out of cabelas spending thousands……….

Consider giving some of your flies to the local well respected fishing guide in your area, "ask him ,,hey try these out, and……"

the best way to do the business would be to tie all year……..have your inventory ready and then hit the fishing shows, you can sit there most of the day tieing a couple of flies, chatting up the customers …..alot of people want to learn to tie flies, even have bought the mat’ls ,but never have the time…….

take for instance the Suffern Fishing show at Rockland Community College, its on the border near Penn, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, and Mass are not to far away………..there is alot of money in that area, people up from the city and they will drop hundreds…….if you have a quality product it will sell………….people going to the show are not going to buy flies that could be bought at the local kmart….they are looking for a quality product

Definitely, fishing is popular, and that is a niche idea. If you put yourself online, you’ll probably end up making money.

You can check this site out, it has information on how to make money online.

    Barbara,
You are a clever girl. I think you are on to a good idea. Before jumping in with both feet, be sure you can make a good quality lure. Try making up a few and taking them to a local sporting/fising good store (or send them away if you have to) to get an idea of what they expect, if yours is good enough, etc.

Another idea is to market them yourself with your own website. You could make one specifically on fly fishing and allow people to order custom flies. Then you join some affiliate companies that sell other types of fly fishing gear and earn commissions off of every sale. You could also include Google ads on your site and earn commissions from that.

If not fly fishing, you could do this with some other type of craft that you already know and love. I just started in November building a site on chocolate candy and I have over 200 pages and am starting to earn a little more each month. I don’t even sell my own product (yet 🙂 ) so you can do something like that too. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to build a site. I had ZERO computer knowledge, but the program I used provided all the technical bits, I just had to do the writing.

If you think this may be something you’d like to consider there is more info. in my profile.

I wish you the best – with your creativity you can definitely do well if you are willing to put the time and effort in.
