How do I start a home based business?

I am currently doing payroll and human resources for a company and have been thinking about starting my own payroll consulting business from home. I already know the software I would like to buy and is pretty afordable considering that will be the huge chuck of my business. Just wondering on everyones thoughts as to companies that would be interested in this. I currently live and work in the state of Montana, but would be able to do payroll for multiple states with the software I am looking at. Any opinions or leads would be helpful.

It’s a very competative market. The best thing that you could do would be to build some relationships with some periphial companies. That is, companies who service the same market in a similar but different way. For instance, I work with a company called Safeguard and we are known for, among other things, being check printers. I am always trying to build relationships with folks like you because we regularly have customers coming to us looking for a payroll service, which means that we’ll loose their payroll check business. So, if we have relationships with payroll services we refer our customers to them, they do the same, and we offer the serviec a discount on check stock so that they can be competative in the market.

    Just a question for you….

Considering the amount of time it would take you to get set up and established with finding companies to service and such…..would you be open to taking a look at another alternative to making money from your home?
