Does anyone know if ham/mobile/CB radio operators have the capabilities to eavesdrop on home phones?

Does anyone know if ham/mobile/CB radio operators have the capabilities to eavesdrop on wireless and/or landline telephone conversations? If so, would it be possible to zero in on a specific, wireless home phone, by address or position instead of by number. We have a civil lawsuit pending…Based on some odd information that was exposed during previous negotiations; I suspect some "funny business" is going on. It just so happens, that the defendant in this case, is a "radio head" with a top-of-the-line base and 4 mobile units. If this, in fact happening…not just paranoia, what (if anything) can be done to counter or stop such an activity?

Yes with certain radios a ham user can listen in on phone conversations, however if that person was ever caught the FCC would more and likely revoke the users license, and stick them with several hundreds of dollars in fines.

Ham/CB radios do not operate on the same frequency as cordless phones and can not receive their transmission. Most Ham/CB operators own scanners which do have the capability to pick up cordless phones. They would have to be within 500 feet or so because that is about as far as a cordless phone can transmit. Ouside of the transmit range, it would not be possible to "zero" in on someone. Scanners or cb equipment do not have the capability to pick up landline conversations unless the the line was tapped and broadcasted the conversation over a frequency that could be picked up by the scanner or CB. A spectrum analizer would be able to pick up almost any radio transmission and would need to be within the transmitted range of the cordless phone. No conversation over cell/landline/cordless will ever be private. As far as combating this – keep in mind someone somewhere has the capability to listen in on your conversations no matter what you do.

Stumble Bee gives an excellent answer.

Just like in the TV show "24", they do have scrambler phones. But it would be a bit of an overkill just to protect a few conversations.

Consider using a Cell phone. The signals are digital now, and difficult to tap.

No one can listen in to your phone calls if you are using a hardwired phone.

If you are using a cordless phone, then *maybe*.

If your phone transmits with an analog signal, then anyone with a scanner can monitor your conversations. If the phone has digital transmission, then you are safe, as digital modulation cannot be monitored.

If you do not know for sure, then it is best not to use a cordless phone for any sensitive communications.
