Do I really need a business license to run a home based internet business?

I want to start a clothing shop online, but I don’t know if I need a business license. Can I start my business without one?

Probably not, but then again, I’d check with your state and local government. If you’re selling tangible goods that you actually stock yourself (not as an affiliate of a store like Amazon or something), then you may have to charge sales tax to people in your state, even if your website is online.

I would say it’d be best to check that stuff first before diving in. If you want to sell clothes online through something like an eBay store, then that may be a bit different.

Hope that helps! Good luck on your new venture.

License? No dear, operate from your own home. If you have your own home, a computer, an internet connection, then all you need is some time and patience. Create a small website and put your business there for everybody to see. Of course, there is work involved. It is not that simple as it sounds. Do a little research on the net. The answer is it depends on your location…

For an online business you’ll probably be ok but you should definitely check your local city ordinance/rules on running a business from your home. The main reason they want to you to pay for a license is to get that extra revenue 🙂 There are many resources on the Web dedicated to home business information. Good luck with your new venture.
