You don’t NEED TO registe, but registering as a LLC or Company helps from the angle of liability.

It really depends on what you are doing. Many professions require a license and are regulated by state agencies. Contact your local Small Business Administration and discuss this with them. IF you don’t and at the end of the year when you do your taxes you may have to pay penalties for not paying your taxes on time.

    Good Luck.

yes you need a local license for your home business (here we do that thru the occupational licensing department of the tax collector’s office in our county)…if you are a very small business and aren’t sure it will go statewide or widespread, then all you need is the occupational license, and you pay taxes to your state. If you use only your own name then you don’t have to get a state license for now and you can stay sole proprietorship till you grow. Sole proprietorship means if they sue you they can take your car, home, etc. so if your business is low key you’ll be ok.

If you plan (if you’ve done your 5-year plan from sba.gov and taken a new business course) to grow in five years, then you will need to choose a name and file that name with the Department of Corporations in your state (usually is in the capitol city of your state). You can also do that online.

You will need to collect sales tax from customers in Illinois, so talk to the taxing authorities about that.
