Franchise or self employment?

My husband and i are currently facing redundancy, we will have a small amount of money that we could use to go self employed but are unsure whether going it alone or going with a franchise is the best idea. We have looked on several websites about franchising but nothing has really jumped out at us, we are concerned of being scammed as there seems to be a lot of that going on. We don’t mind hard work or working long hours but would prefer if possible to be home based where possible as we have a young son. We have thought about an embroidery business, life and career coaching (i have a post grad in careers guidance and loads of experience in this area, also currently completing a life coaching diploma), white van man/second hand furniture/house clearance business. We are looking for ideas and pointers if anyone can help out!

I agree with the other answers warning against franchises. By the way, with a franchise you are still self employed.

Franchise Good Points
1 – You have a ready made business idea without having to start it from scratch
2 – You should also get support from ‘head office’, including training and marketing materials
3 – You will have other people in the franchise you can speak to – swopping ideas on what works etc

Franchise Bad Points
1 – You ususally have to pay significant sums to buy a franchise
2 – You still have to find your own customers and this can be a real pressure if you have invested heavily in a franchise
3 – Often there are limits (under the franchise agreement) on how you are permitted to expand your business

I wouldn’t discount a franchise totally. The main question should be how much money are people already making in the franchise? Also, how easy is it to find customers?

If you decide against a franchise you need to work out whether there is a gap in the market locally for your other ideas. They all sound decent possibilities.

One possibility is to try several of your ideas in a small way to see what works best. You can then choose the best, or continue with several part time businesses.

    Self Employment, definitely.

Franchises are usually very expensive and in reality they are nothing you cannot set up yourself and sometimes you can just end up with a cheap universal website and a stack of business cards and letterheads, also after a while the support from the seller dries up, especially if you are new to the game and not generating enough business early on.

If you have a little extra cash set aside, use it wisely, pool your intelectual resources and discover what you really want a crack at, look at ebay for corporate goods, you save a package on your promo materials.

if you starting up go self employed as their are more benefits /grants available and help rather than with franchising which takes away profit from you

Nothing more rewarding than setting up your own business and doing it your way! Franchising is great as you get an established brand and you can hit the floor running from the start. But there is a lot of conformities to follow, have to do business their way, following franchisor rules and regulations and so forth. Plus a lot of the profits go back to the franchisor, that is how franchising works.

If you can do it yourself, go for it.

With a franchise really you’re paying for a system that supposedly works. It’s right to be cautious, there’s a lot of scammers out there, as well as genuine opportunities.

But bottomline, you’re really buying a job.

Sure, its a job with profits, but because you have to follow the franchise way, its not the same as starting up on your own.

It works for some people, and much more likely to be a success.

Depends what you want out of life I guess.

    All the best,
